Fingers instinctively turned right as he bolted out of the garage. Head down, he ran blindly, giving no real thought to where he was going. All that mattered was giving the thugs who were after him the slip.

They had to be Jonas Willard’s men. There was no other explanation for it, which meant that the old man had somehow worked out that he and Dazza were responsible for the death of one of his men.

Reaching the end of the road, Fingers skidded to a halt, trying to decide whether to head left into the estate or go right and leg it through the viaduct?

The Black Horse stood directly in front of him, and he briefly considered seeking sanctuary in there, but then dismissed that idea for fear that the criminal scumbags who frequented it would hand him straight over to his pursuers.

“Fingers, you alright, mate?” a slurred voice called out, making him jump.

The sound had come from his right, and he spun in that direction to see Arthur the old Teddy Boy and his Russian mate, Vlad, staggering along the tunnel towards him, both as pissed as farts.

His stupid response to Arthur’s goading the other night came rushing back. “…Yeah, well it won’t be when we sell off the diamonds…” Grinding his teeth in anger, he realised that the old man must have sold him out to Willard’s men.

Glancing back over his shoulder, Fingers spotted two of Willard’s goons running full pelt towards him. The first was a slender man with short dark hair and hooded eyes. He looked fit and formidable, and there was something about his deportment that reminded Fingers of Dazza.

Another ex-squaddie, perhaps?

The second man was the lumbering albino who had attacked Marshall. Built for strength, not speed, he was lagging a good ten yards behind his fleet footed companion.

Ignoring Arthur and Vlad, who were giggling away to themselves as they beckoned him to join them for a quick pint, Fingers ran across the cobbled road and started scaling the seven-foot-high meshed fence that had been erected between the end of the pub and the start of the railway viaduct. Slinging a leg over the sharp spikes that protruded from the top, Fingers cautiously stood up, steadying himself against the viaduct wall with one hand. Swaying dangerously, he groped for a handhold in the brickwork above his head. It would be a dangerous climb, but if he could reach the top of the viaduct, some twelve feet above him, he would be able to make good his escape along the railway tracks.

Looking down, Fingers heart sank as the ex-military type sprinted across the road after him. The fucker was fast, and there was a grim determination about him that Fingers found deeply unsettling

Taking a deep breath, and praying that he wouldn’t fall and kill himself in the process, Fingers launched himself into the air, making a desperate grab for a protruding ledge a few feet above his head.
